1. Jefferson C1 CULPEPPER, son of No INFORMATION, (#49) was born in Muscogee County GA May 18, 1832. Jefferson died December 28, 1902 at 70 years of age.

He married Elizabeth Howard CULPEPPER in Lee County Alabama, May 28, 1868. (Elizabeth Howard CULPEPPER is #147.) BIO:One of five sons who came from Germany, settled in Virginia soon to be called Culpepper,Virginia. Jefferson was a soldier in the Civil war wounded twice. He is buried in the Girard Cemetery. His wife the former Mrs. Howard her father was a medicine man and taught Jefferson the trade and soon began to sell the elixer locally. He was killed while collecting from his customers. Resident Of the state about 24 years.Has been continuously in Muscogee Co. since Mar. 1874. Enlisted in May 1861 at Columbus, GA. in Co. C 1h 17th Regt. GA. Volunteers. Served in Virginia Army about 3 years. Total of three years and seven months. Discharged on April 1, 1865 at the surrender of Gen. R. E. Lee. at Appomattox Court House Va. Clipping from Columbus Ledger, Dec. 31, 1902 RUPTURE OF BLOOD VESSEL IN THE BRAIN Caused Death Of Jeff C. Culpepper Well Known Confederate Veteran Mr. Jeff C. Culpepper, age 71 years, a well known Confederate veteran, died at his residence, No. 1337 Twelth Ave., east of the city at noon Monday. The funeral occured yesterday afternoon, the interment being at Girard cemetery. The circumstances under which Mr. Culpepper, or rather under which he was stricken, were rather pecular. It seems that Saturday night he and another man were going up Wynn's hill when they both fell into a ditch. The man stated that he himself fell, but that Mr. Culpepper did not strike the ground as he was able to reach him in time to prevent his striking the ground violently, and let him down rather gently. It seems that Mr. Culpepper never regained consciousness. He was carried into a house nearby and later carried to his home. He was waited upon by Dr's Gill and Cosby, but he had sustained a fatal stroke or something like apoplexy. Paralysas was brought on by a rupture of a blood vessel in his head. His family thought that he had met his death as a result of foul play. There was a bruse on his head, and other bruses about his person from which they surmised that he had been roughly handled by someone. The coronerwas summoned but decided not to hold an inquest, as he did not think the county would not pay for it. The family were anxious to have an inquest held but did not have the funds with which pay the jury. One of the doctors said he was inclined to think that there was nothing in the theory of foul play; that Mr. Culpepper was quite old and possibly the blood vessel in the brain were distended, he might have sustained paralysis, which caused him to fall down or possibly the shock of the fall itself burst some of the blood vessels. Mr. Culpepper served in the war as a member of Company C Seventeeth of Camp Benning. He was a member of Camp Benning, and a number of members of the camp attended his funeral. Besides his wife, Mr. Culpepper is survived by two sons, Mr. Jesse Culpepper, whose whereabouts are not known and Mr. Robert Culpepper of Columbus, and two daughters; Miss Ophelia and Miss Fannie May Culpepper both of this city. One brother Mr. John Culpepper of Columbus and one sister Mrs. Carolyn Adams of Heard County, Georgia also survived Him. The funeral service which was from the house at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, was conducted by Rev. H.C.Harley.
